What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a treatment that encourages the body to promote natural healing and improve functioning. tIt involves using small, relatively painless needles. These are sterile, disposable needles and are solid unlike the hollow needles used for injections. The treatment with needles may be combined with heat or electrical stimulation at precise acupuncture points. It may be used alone or included as part of a comprehensive management program. This treatment originated in China over 2500 years ago and is now becoming popular among American medical practitioners and the general public.
Conditions that can be treated with Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be useful for a broad range of diseases. The World Health Organization has published a review of controlled clinical trials of acupuncture therapy as reported in the current literature:
How effective is acupuncture?
The National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference concluded that acupuncture has shown promising results in the treatment of a variety of conditions. More than one million Americans currently receive acupuncture treatment each year, and throughout its history, more people may have been treated with acupuncture than any other form of medicine.
How does acupuncture work?
Although studies suggest acupuncture is effective for the treatment of numerous conditions, scientists have not precisely determined the mechanisms by which it works. The classical Chinese explanation is that the acupuncture needles unblock the flow of energy channels that run throughout the body. Modern studies show that acupuncture needles trigger the release of body’s own chemicals that may be responsible for acupuncture’s healing effects. These chemicals may change the experience of pain, or trigger the release of other hormones which stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms.
A very small percentage of people may not respond to acupuncture because their bodies don't liberate enough of these chemical or hormones
How many treatment sessions will be needed?
The number of treatment sessions will depend on the condition and the duration of the illness. On an average, six to twelve sessions will be required. Each session lasts thirty minutes to an hour depending on the condition being treated. Treatment may be once a week or more often, again depending on the severity and duration of the illness.
