Reiki
What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a healing technique which has its origin in ancient Tibetan Buddhism.  It
was rediscovered in the mid 1800s by a Japanese monk Dr. Mikao Usi.  It is a form of energy medicine like
Pranic healing and Therapeutic Touch

All living forms have a life-force energy.  Though we cannot see these energy systems,  they are a
vital part of the human body.  It is this life force that keeps the body in balance on the physical, mental and
emotional levels.  This energy is called
Prana in Sanskrit and Chi in Chinese.  Disease or illness occurs
because of imbalance in this energy field.  Reiki helps to restore this life force when it is out of balance or
is deficient. The Reiki treatment balances the energy centers in the
Chakras (Sanskrit for ‘wheels’ ) .
Chakras  are like pumping stations that distribute energy throughout the body.  There are seven major
Chakras and twentyone minor Chakras.  The major Chakras  are located parallel to the spine from the tail
bone to the top of the head. They are connected to each other and the physical body through channels
called
nadis (meridians in Chinese medicine ).

How does Reiki help?

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing.  Reiki treats the whole person -  mind, body and
emotions.  It reduces stress and promotes relaxation and healing.  It relieves tension and anxiety and helps
lower blood pressure and heart rate.  The relaxed state leads to release of endorphins which act like
Morphine, thereby decreasing bodily pain.  Reiki treatment also boosts the immune system increasing
resistance to infection.  Thus healing occurs at all levels leading to an overall sense of wellbeing

The Reiki treatment:

The Reiki practitioner transmits vital energy from the universal energy field to the recipient’s energy
field.  The patient lies clothed on a treatment table.  The practitioner places his hands gently but firmly over
the body.  The hands are placed over twelve basic positions for about three to five minutes - four positions
are on the head, four on the front of the body and four on the back.  The hands move sequentially from
the top of the head down the body to the coccyx.  Reiki treatment session lasts about an hour.

More and more physicians including anesthesiologists and surgeons are incorporating Reiki in their
patient managment.

Anyone can benefit from Reiki treatment.  One need not have belief in Reiki to benefit from it.  There
are no side effects or complications from Reiki treatment.
